Why do the odds fluctuate?

The most basic explanation is that the bookmaker must take action on both sides in order to make a profit.

  • Assume that Team A has odds of -1.40. You will bet 140 to win 100.
  • The odds for Team B are +120. You'll bet $100 to win $120.
  • If two persons place a wager, one for 140 on Team A and the other for 100 on Team B.
  • Assume Team B is defeated (they were the underdog after all). As a result, the bookie takes 100 from him.
  • He still has to pay the man who gambled on Team A; he owes him $100. He eventually makes a profit on this game.

The bookmaker may suffer a severe loss if the action was too heavy on Team B. And it does occur.

But, if the bookmaker notices too much movement on Team B, he will modify the odds to encourage more action on Team A.

That way, he won't get too far down the rabbit hole (preferably not at all).

Of course, if the game had gone the other way, the bookmaker would have taken 140 from Team A and then had to pay 100 to the individual who bet on Team B, resulting in a +40 profit (to the bookie).

The bookie's goal is to have more days where he makes a profit than days when he breaks even or loses…just like you.

How do you interpret odds in American, fractional, and decimal formats?

Sportsbooks display odds in three different ways. Most books allow you to choose how the odds are stated, which you will do based on what is easiest to read/understand.

Most people will think that decimal odds are the easiest to read/understand.

But you may look at all three (with examples) and decide for yourself.

The American Odds

They are written in whole numbers and preceded by a plus (+) or minus (-) symbol.

As an example:

Team A: +120

Team B: -140

The plus sign indicates that the club is an underdog, and that you must wager $100 to win the amount stated. In this case, you'd wager $100 to earn $120.

Negative signs indicate the inverse. The team is a favorite, and you must bet the amount specified to win $100. In this example, you would wager $140 to win $100.

Odds in Fractions

These are the most common in the United Kingdom. They are expressed as fractions.

  • For instance: 1.5/1
  • This might be something like: You wager $1 to win $1.50.
